June Member Spotlight: Jenny Ritner

Who: Jenny Ritner, 57, joined Body Zone last November 2016

In April 2017, Jenny celebrated five years as a breast cancer survivor. She wants to continue to improve her health and make strides in her recovery from the side effects of chemotherapy with the help of Body Zone. On weekday mornings – four or five times a week – she gets in before work and rides the stationary bike.

This is her escape: With a book in hand, and the rhythm of her own pedaling driving her forward, she says that the bike is always beeping before she knows it. Jennie likes to cap off her pre-work routine with a few laps around Body Zone’s suspended track. She’s worked desk jobs for 40 years, and still does, and she says that keeps her motivated to stay active.

Cancer’s side effects also require her to be diligent about staying active and fit. A drug she takes to reduce the risk of the cancer returning puts her at risk for osteoporosis, and she’s always looking for ways to strengthen her core and muscles. On the weekend, Jennie can be found using the training floor lifting weights and relieving her muscles in the pool or whirlpool afterwards.

Jenny credits Body Zone personal training staff in giving her helpful guidance to working out around her special needs and limitations.

“I have a nerve embedded in scar tissue that limits my range of motion in my left arm,” she told us. “I have to make sure I am using appropriate equipment so I don’t complicate these issues. I met with one of the BZ trainers and she gave me valuable guidance on how to manage my workout.”

Day in and day out, Jenny is committing to making herself healthier and more active by making the most of Body Zone’s training floor and equipment. Her greatest achievement to date? Her self-proclaimed step one: Making the commitment to get fit.

“I was always tired and felt like I had no energy after working. I just wanted to sit on the couch and do nothing,” she said. “But when I started taking a walk in the evenings, I felt so much better after a few weeks!”
