September Member Spotlight: Denise and Bob Weston
The duo has been using Body Zone as their place for recovery and fitness since 2015, and enjoy pushing each other to new fitness feats every day
When Bob Weston, a lifelong and active outdoors man, was finished with back surgery in December 2015, he was ready to get his fitness levels back on track. And there was no one else he wanted by his side on his road to recovery than his wife, Denise.
His goal post surgery? Increase his heart rate for 30 minutes a day, and do exercises that properly pull his spine and core apart but also carry zero impact on his back. Hers? To get in “prime bikini condition” upon Bob’s arrival to full recovery.
While the two drive to Body Zone separately, and do their own workouts, it’s their motivation they give each other in the early morning that works wonders, and propelled the two through excuses or tiredness in the first year of working out. Now, they’re absolutely in love with their near-daily workout routine, and feel like it’s a vital installment to their everyday lives.
“We have our own goals and routines,” Denise told Body Zone. “I usually run on the treadmill and try to burn at least 500 calories a workout … I really wanted to see if it was possible for me to get back to my high school weight. Being ready for swimsuit season always takes a little longer these days.”
Bob’s workout is carefully calculated to minimize any strain on his back, and he loves jumping in to Body Zone’s Olympic-sized swimming pool for laps. When he started out post-back surgery in December 2015, he could hardly do 20 laps in the pool. Nowadays, 20 laps is his cool-down. He attributes the pool’s low-impact nature as aiding his recurring back pain, as well as a range of weight exercises on the training floor. All of these contributed to him getting back what he calls a “High School” level athleticism and look.
Aside from both Denise and Bob striving to get back to a fitness level from a prior stage in life, the two are working out to be able to do the things they love more – and pain-free. They love to spend their time outdoors, whether it’s kayaking, riding Bob’s motorcycle, camping or sailing. When Bob hurt his back, though, they were afraid that they would never be able to return to their previous state of adventure and fun.
That’s when Body Zone came in to play, and they found a special motivation within each other to head to the gym (and pool) and get healthy.
“Body Zone has been my saving grace,” Bob said. “I’m the same weight I graduated at, we eat crazy-healthy … I’m hoping I can pull off another miracle and regain my ability to do all the things we used to do.”
Their fitness and lifestyle advice to others? (as they forge on with a successful plan of their own!)
“Change comes from effort,” Denise told us. “I have had success going from a size 6 to a size 2 because we work out every day whether we like it or not.”
The duo firmly believes that after just two weeks of committing oneself to the gym daily – whether they like it or not – anyone will see results and feel the natural drive to seek health and fitness.
