Donna’s Top Four Activities For Kids

Donna Lascoskie, our director of youth programs (Tot Sports, Summer Camp, Day Camp and Parties!) for the past eight years, and a career coordinator of all things children and youth, knows a thing or two about how to get kids moving and engaged. We tapped her for the latest ideas AKA proven winners since our summer campers love them too.

Donna’s Top Four Activities For Kids

1. Get creative!
Shake things up and give your kids positive change to look forward to by having fun with themed days/weeks. Choose a theme and several activities to support the theme! Here is an example:
Pirate Day:
• Dress like a pirate
• Talk like a pirate
• Look up and study facts about parrots, pirates, and pirate ships
• Eat a meal like a pirate – without utensils!
• Make a ship out of cardboard
• Watch Peter Pan as a family
• Go on a treasure hunt outside!

A few more theme ideas:
• Sports day — everyone wears their favorite sports jersey
• Crazy socks day
• Dig out your holiday/Halloween/Valentine’s Day decor and outfits to celebrate your favorite holidays

2.Make space to be active
• Have fun with some kid-friendly exercises like these.
• Create indoor/outdoor obstacle courses
• Play tag — Do you know how many types of games of tag exist? Here’s 10.
• Animal races – run like a bear, frog, snake, rabbit and cheetah

3.Create a masterpiece
Try this recipe to make your own fun soft and pliable dough.
You need:
1 cup flour
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1/3 teaspoon of salt
food coloring of your choice
1 cup water
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
Mix the flour, cream of tartar, and salt in a saucepan. Add a few drops of food coloring, water and oil to the pan. Keep stirring until it gets solid and the dough starts to gather on the spoon. 20-30 seconds for gas stove, 2-3 minutes for electric stove.

4. Get some fresh air
Spending time in nature soaking up the sun boosts your immune system and staying active brightens your mood! Go on a rainbow walk — try to find different items that match each color in a rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet
