March Member Spotlight: Evelyn Teti
When 25-year-old Body Zone member Evelyn Teti joined Body Zone, her motivations were slightly different than the typical woman in her mid-twenties.
On a winter day in 2016, Evelyn’s SUV slid on black ice and rolled over several times. Then just 23, she ended up with a broken hand and her back broken in five different places. After surgery, she was in a walker and large back brace for months, and had to rely on others to help her do things that she was used to doing every day. Walking, showering and eating all required the help of someone.
“There are experiences in life that you plan for and others that you don’t,” Evelyn told us. “After a few months I was allowed to take my back brace off, and in that time I lost all of my muscle and something as simple as holding my head up was difficult. I’d get winded walking the shortest distance and I couldn’t lift more than five pounds.”
Evelyn joined Body Zone six months after getting her back brace off, and she says that it was immediately clear she didn’t know where to begin. With so much fundamental exercise needed, she reached out to staffers of Body Zone’s Personal Training department, who helped her regain the basic muscles she lost after her surgery – it was with those early training sessions that she also began to rebuild her confidence, and lay the foundation for conquering some impressive fitness goals.
Evelyn now trains with Body Zone Assistant Director of Fitness Dave Moseley once a week, and he couldn’t speak any more highly of her improvements.
“We began with simple circuit style training, but quickly started to increase the volume and intensity of workouts once I saw how far she had come since her accident,” Dave said. “Evelyn is now an expert at ring rows, sled pushes, battle ropes, dumbbells, and her personal favorite … BURPEES! Sometimes she will do multiple short “sprint” workouts, other sessions have one giant “marathon” workout.”
Evelyn says she still has plenty of strides to make, but she’s proud of what she’s accomplished over the last year and a half. Since getting back to the gym after her car accident, she’s lost more than 20 pounds and has gained backed all of her muscle lost – and some!
Dave says that her latest InBody Body Composition screenings are a reflection of her hard work and dedication to coming to the gym three to four times a week: “Our InBody scan has displayed exactly what her massive improvements look like … stronger and leaner body composition.”
Evelyn says that she plans on participating in a Tough Mudder competition or marathon later this year, but she adds a disclaimer that best characterizes her unrelenting outlook on health and wellness: “I want to continue to push myself to be better than I am today. Tomorrow isn’t something that is guaranteed so start with today!”
